The Diósd Limestone Quarry

The abandoned quarry by Route 70 on the edge of Diósd yielded Leitha (Sarmatian-type) limestone comparable to that of the famous Fertőrákos Quarry near Sopron (which includes an underground auditorium and has been used several times as a film set.) The workings have left a 150x100 m depression in the side of the Tétény Plateau. The more than a dozen aquare cavities cut into the face are 8-10 m high and lead 10-20 m into the rock, with vast stone pillars with a diameter of 2-3 m at the front to hold up the roof. These cavities, which resemble an arcade, are a spectacular reminder of the workings of old. Around them, the original tree and scrub vegetation of the area has survived. Dénes Balázs, in his 1989 study, was the first to point out that the quarry would make a good open-air display area for geographical and geological exhibits such as the old methods used in quarrying, along with the geological formations and history and the special karst vegetation of the Tétény Plateau. Sad to say, the quarry is succumbing at present to illegal dumping of waste.
