The Czabai Garden

The 0.6-ha Czabai Garden at the corner of Radnai utca and Bikszádi utca, Érd-Parkváros is and enclosure preserving the earlier vegetation of the area, although it is not untouched primary forest, as the early stock was replenished after depredations about 1920-30.

English oak (Quercus robur) and sessile oak (Q. petraea) are the most typical trees. (English oak bears acorns on longish stalks, as opposed to hardly any stalk at all, but has very short leaf stalks; like its bud and shoots these are smooth, while those of sessile oak are downy.) Also found are field maple (Acer campestre) and common walnut (Junglans regia). The trees, now 50 to 70 years old, are a rare remnant of earlier natural conditions. Their survival and development has been due above all to the care of past and present owners of the garden.

The garden was placed under a nature protection order in 1977 to “preserve the stock of oak trees, reflecting the earlier state of the district, ensure undisturbed nesting for the bird life of the locality, offer a chance to observe the natural development of forest, provide an aesthetic attraction for visitors, and enable the valuable crop of acorns to be used for afforestation. “The stock of 238 trees, 14-22 m in height with trunk diameters of 30-55 cm, has been much damaged in recent years by mistletoe (Viscum album), which reached enormous dimensions and threatened several trees. The owner, Balázs Czabai, a conscientious custodian, receives visitors by appointment.
