The Berza Garden

This garden in Érd-Parkváros, surrounded by a high limestone wall, is approached from Borostyán utca. The protected woodland is dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), which formed extensive forests in this region in the most recent Ice Age, especially on higher ground. As the climate warmed up, the pine forest retreated into the Bakony Hills and Western Transdanubia. Its presence on the Érd-Tétény Plateau is the result of planting, but Scots pine does well on the strongly alkaline, karst surface, even where the soil is poor.

The planted stock of the woodland garden has been much depleted in the last two decades; only half the 300 trees of twenty years ago remain. These are 60-80 years old, and little replacement work has been done. The protection order dates from 1971. The garden can be visited by prior appointment with the owner.
